If you want to
listen to a great blues music accompanied by impressive words, all performed
by Cherokee descendents, try Rainbow
Warriors, whose songs' lyrics are to be found in a Czech translation on my
Czech language web ("Soul of an Indian"
and "Satanta").
I also love very much the explosive blues-rock of the Native American band Indigenous
from South Dakota. The band is formed by four siblings - descendents of
the famous Sioux Chief Standing Bear. There are 12 MP3 for download on
their website.
If you prefer the folk-rock music with no less great lyrics, try Son
of Lakota, the talented Oglala musician Tony Brave. I have translated to
Czech his song H'e Sapa speaking about the
ancestral and sacred tie between the Lakota Nation and the Black Hills. This
territory was illegally confiscated by the US Government more than century ago
and since then Lakota people ask it back. Their demand is based on the
treaties signed in the past with the USA, validating their ownership rights on
this land. The Supreme US Court ruled in their favor in 1980 - but
instead of the land return, Lakota people were offered money as a
compensation. They are a poor Nation, but they rejected this payment because
their respect for the sacred land of their grandfathers wouldn't allow them to
sell it.
Although punk-rock never belonged to my favorite
musical styles, I can vividly recommend you to visit the site of the Navajo
group BLACKFIRE. I
translated for them during their Prague concert on September 27,
2000 (the group was on an European tour) and I sincerely love them for the way
how they managed to put in harmony their fierce music and old Native
spirituality. They have all my admiration and respect for their engagement in
the struggle of Native American people demanding justice. You can see pictures
from their 2000 concert in Prague, other pages of pictures from their 2001
shows in Prague and Brno or read an article
illustrated with beautiful pictures on their performance at Prague 2001 Street
Party and a traditional dances performance at Prague Strelecky Island. These
shows were part of BLACKFIRE 2001 European Tour, which Czech and Slovak parts
I organized - it was meant as a tribute to Native American political prisoner Leonard
Peltier. In 2002, they should be in the Czech Republic in the first half
of July. We are all looking forward...
Of course, you would need to have a software player installed on your computer
in order to listen to the songs. If you don't have any, I recommend you to
download for free the RealPlayer.
