Words of Wisdom

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart.

Trouble no one about his religion.

Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours.

Love your life; perfect your life, beautify all things in your life.

Seek to make your life long and of service to your People.

Prepare a noble death song for the day you go over the Great Divide.

Always give a word or sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, or even a stranger, if in a lonely place.

Show respect to all people, but grovel to none.

When you rise in the morning give thanks for the light, for your life, for your strength.

Give thanks for the food and for the joy of living.

If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault is in yourself.

Touch not the poisonous firewater that makes the wise ones turn to fools and robs the spirit of it's vision.

When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way.

Sing your death song like a hero going home...

Tecumseh

Who am I?

My name is Bushka, I am an independent Czech publicist and I have my personal homepage in English where you can find out more about my life and interests if you wish to.

Among other media I contribute to BRITSKÉ LISTY (British Papers) - Czech independent news server considered as an important reference by Czech media, SVĚT NAMODRO (World in Blue) - one of the most popular Czech mainstream web magazines, and under the nickname of "Auntie Bushka" (Teta Bushka) to  WWW.KOUKAT.CZ - a popular alternative site visited mostly by young Czech and Slovak people. I am writing about very divers topics, keeping my main focus on human rights issues. During the last year I was collaborating with the Czech Parliament on the draft of new legislation on marihuana decriminalization as a member of Drug Subcommittee of the Chamber of the Deputies and advisor to Deputy František Pejřil.

I have started a campaign for the release of Leonard Peltier here in the Czech Republic. Now, a two years later I am no more a lonely rider, new friends are joining my efforts and the Czech Leonard Peltier Support Group (LPSG CR) has been created. In 2001 I have made a series of author readings from my translation of Leonard Peltier's "Prison Writings" as my contribution to Peltier Awareness Month initiated by the LPDC. The readings were making an integral part of 2 weeks long Czech and Slovak Tour of the Navajo band Blackfire in the framework of their European Tour 2001, which I have organized.

There were no information available about Peltier's case in the Czech media at all before I created my Czech sub-web "Leonard PeltieR*" on this site. People in my country have never heard his story of deliberate injustice and over 20 years of life in an undeserved prison. I tried to change it, therefore I wrote a few articles and myself was very surprised by their response with our young people. After two years of efforts to spread the awareness on injustices committed by the US government against Native Americans, I can proudly say that Peltier's name became familiar to young Czechs and many of them are beginning to understand that there is an ongoing genocide of the original inhabitants of the American continent being perpetrated by the US government. I don't pretend that Czech signatures under the petition calling for Peltier's release would change anything. US politicians will certainly put more weight to those coming from US voters. Our signatures will be a kind of a reminder saying that this case is no more a pure US business, but it has become an international US shame.

You might ask why do I care for a stranger living so far away from my country. I am a Czech and I have never met any Native American until recently and neither had any of my ancestors. But I believe that every case where an injustice is committed on any Native American people concerns all white people because those were our ancestors, it was our Western civilization that had almost annihilated the one in place in Americas and exterminated the local population. Now, at the beginning of the 21st century we have got enough distance to see it and enough wisdom (I hope so) to understand that our ways were not at any case superior because our civilization has arrived to a kind of a blind alley through its emphasis on material progress and a howling neglect of the spiritual development of human beings. On my English personal website is a page called THE BUSHKAISM where I tried to make a reflection on the sense of our existence as human beings.

Second part of the story is to be found in CZ X NPPA. THE BEST OF NPPA - examples of postings in the NPPA's guestbook and a poignant example of Czech humor - a joke about the webmaster of NPPA's site making laugh Czech hackers. An interactive pic of Sue's colleague agent Scully doing the autopsy on a Rosswell alien. LP MARCH REPORT from Prague Peltier March, TV ON PRAGUE MARCH - transcript of Czech TV reportage and PICS PRAGUE MARCH. Page with a report from a participant to the NEW YORK MARCH.

The button ARTICLE ICT ON LP hides an article from Indian Country Today on Peltier's demand of clemency written by Suzan Shown Harjo.

PRISON PAINTINGS* - a new gallery of 36 Leonard Peltier's amazing paintings and lithographs on 6 pages, accompanied by explanatory texts in English and Czech written mostly by Peltier himself.

DREAMKEEPERS.NET is a page about a very interesting project realized by Leonard Peltier's friend and editor Harvey Arden, who has created a community of LivingBooks narrated by Elders from around the World in order to preserve the spiritual heritage of Indigenous Nations. Extracts from the LivingBook of Arvol Looking Horse, the 19th Generation Keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe and his World Peace and Prayer Day Statement for 2002.

WRITINGS* - excerpts from the book written by Leonard Peltier - "Prison Writings: My Life Is My Sundance". Courtesy of Harvey Arden - Leonard's editor. Author readings from my translation of this book were part of the Navajo band BLACKFIRE European Tour in 2001 around the Czech Republic and Slovakia, which I organized. NATIVE WRITINGS I, NATIVE WRITINGS II  and NATIVE WRITINGS III - poetry of my Indian friends and Peltier's supporters. LETTER TO LEONARD - my letter to Leonard Peltier's 56th birthday.

OYATE - This page is a tribute to the Lakota Oglala Grass Roots Oyate because upon completion of a careful study of the press releases to learn just what has been occurring at Pine Ridge, it is inconceivable that there would be those who do not support the Grass Roots Oyate from Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in their actions.

BLACKFIRE TOUR 2002 - this is a bilingual English and Czech web page on the Navajo rock band BLACKFIRE - performing also traditional dances together with their medicine man-father under the name of The Jones Benally's Family - and their European and Czech Tour 2002. New videos on Black Mesa from Blackfire production.

BLACKFIRE TOUR 2001 - bilingual English and Czech web page on the Navajo rock band BLACKFIRE - and their European and Czech Tour 2001. The tour was a tribute to Leonard Peltier and a contribution to Peltier Month of Awareness.

LEGACY - English translation of the article "Red Man's Legacy and the Street Party 2001", where I made a major contribution. The original article is posted on a very important Czech info server Britské listy. It is a reportage on Prague Street Party, the concert of  BLACKFIRE and the dance show of The Jones' Benally Family during their European tour. Many beautiful pictures!

PICTURES BLACKFIRE* - pictures from their shows in Brno and Prague (2000 and 2001 - 3 pages).

HUMANITY - English translation of the article "Towards the Preservation of Humanity" by Mirek Vodrazka. The article speaks about Prague 2000 concert of the Navajo (Dineh) band BLACKFIRE and about Leonard Peltier. Blackfire returned to the Czech Republic in 2001 and included it into their European Tour. They will come back in 2002 again ... :o))

AMERICAS SUMMIT - English translation of my article in the Czech web magazine "Svet Namodro" about the Native point of view on FTAA and Americas Summit 2001. It includes a poem by J.V. Sladek and a drawing of the Great Spirit by Mikolas Ales - both were great Czech artists of 19th century.

CONSTITUTION - the Constitution of the Five Nations (Cayuga, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, and Seneca) was used as a model for the present US Constitution.

WOUNDED KNEE
by Scott Barta

MORE ABOUT MY FRIEND SCOTT AND HIS FAMOUS FAMILY

Article VI of the U.S. Constitution states "Treaties made with Indian Nations shall be the supreme law of the land, with the judges in every state bound thereby".  Article 3 of the 1851 Treaty of Fort Laramie states "The U.S. bind themselves to protect the seven signatory Indian Nations against the commission of all depredations by the United States".

During a cold winter night on December 15, 1890, U.S. government agents assassinated Tatanka Iyotake "Sitting Bull" at his home as the government began overt efforts to occupy and "establish" the western portion of a state called "South Dakota".  Immediately, the mostly women, children and elderly relatives of Tatanka Iyotake - next on the "death squad hit list" - grabbed what they could carry and fled the area to seek refuge 200 miles south behind a U.S.-supported "paper chief" at Red Cloud, Pine Ridge Indian Reservation Agency.

On December 28, 1890 as the refugees neared the agency, they were overtaken and placed under military arrest by a reincarnation of a recently defeated and dissolved cavalry unit of the army.  The group of Lakota - numbering 453 - were spat upon, beaten, and strip-searched - the women even having even their sewing awls confiscated.  They were force-marched a few miles away to a small valley surrounded by hills called Wounded Knee.

The following day - December 29, 1890 - one of the worst acts of terrorism in the world occurred.  The U.S. troops ordered the hostage Indians from their tents and began herding them together in the pre-blizzard cold. At the planned signal, the terrible massacre began with troops opening fire with their rifles and Hotchkiss guns they had placed upon the hills above during the night overlooking the camp.  The innocent victims were gunned down; survivors attempted to scatter and were shot.  There were reports of infants bayoneted and pregnant women hunted down by the troops and stabbed in the stomach.  Later, the army threw the remains of the 453 in a mass grave.

For years the massacre was propagandized as a "battle" in attempts to blame the victims.  Eighteen U.S. congressional "medals of honor" were awarded to the soldiers for their actions at "Wounded Knee".  The U.S. government has yet to apologize for the atrocity - let alone rescind the nefarious "awards".

The continued occupation of these territories - and theft of trillions of dollars in Lakota gold, mineral resources, timber and tourism - remains a daily violation of Article VI of the U.S. Constitution and the 1851 Treaty of Fort Laramie.

However, Indigenous peoples do not have a word for "sorry".  Wrongs must be admitted, not repeated, and reparations made.  In this case, the Lakota must be afforded the right to become a nation once again, free to travel their homelands and live as they may wish upon their sacred Grand Mother Earth.

"Traditional people of Indian nations have interpreted the two roads that face the light-skinned race as the road to technology and the road to spirituality. We feel that the road to technology.... has led modern society to a damaged and seared earth. Could it be that the road to technology represents a rush to destruction, and that the road to spirituality represents the slower path that the traditional native people have traveled and are now seeking again? The earth is not scorched on this trail. The grass is still growing there."
