My letter to Leonard's birthday

Wild Horse - author of the petition for Leonard Peltier's release - asked me to write a letter to Leonard to his birthday (on September 12) that would be handed him over by his lawyer. I felt it as a great honor that would fully repay me for all my work and efforts in Leonard's cause. I wrote this:

[hr]

Dear Leonard,

I was following your case for more than ten years, choking with helpless anger and rage in my impossibility to help you. Then, just recently I have got an opportunity to be heard by a large public (I received an offer to publish in an internet magazine) and I used it to make your case familiar to the people in my country - in the Czech Republic. Myself, I was surprised by the effect of my words on the young Czech generation. The result is reflected in the number of Czech signatures under the petition asking for your release. I receive many letters from my readers who express their indignation over your unjust trial and sentence and all their support to your cause. People in my country don't know much about the USA or Native Americans, but they have a good sense of justice and they understand how much is freedom important. We lived for more than 40 years under the communist totalitarian regime that was trying to get my people on the knees, but we've never given up. Today, 10 years after the fall of the old regime our young generation is already free of deformations caused by life under oppression and it is not as selfish and self-centered as their elders. You have their full support and the best and sincere wishes to your birthday.

I was very moved reading your reflections in "My Life Is My Sun Dance". Those long years in prison didn't break you down but made you still stronger. For me it is a clear evidence of the fact that you are not guilty. Only an innocent man with clear conscience could go through such an ordeal as you did and attain similar wisdom.

I wish you to be released soon and to be in a good health condition in order to enjoy the freedom when it comes. Waiting for this moment I will pray for you and spread the knowledge about the flagrant injustice committed against you by the descendents of those who had stolen the land of your ancestors.

In the Spirit of Crazy Horse and from the bottom of my heart,

Your Czech friend Bushka Bryndova
