Children were strongly desired and greatly cared for. When a young woman was ready for marriage, the shaman blessed her with the spirit of the eagle bringing her the influence of the Sun and South Wind which would provide her with many children.

Indiáni po dětech velice toužili a pečlivě se o ně starali. Když mladá žena dospěla do věku být matkou, kouzelník jí požehnal ve jménu Ducha Orla, který zajistí blahodárný vliv Slunce a Jižních Větrů, aby měla mnoho dětí.

We once had boundless freedom and could live in the way the Great Spirit set forth for us. If we were to try in today's society to live in the traditional way, it would be as if we were in a foreign land. Today, there are only shadows of the past.

My Indiáni jsme kdysi měli neomezenou volnost a mohli jsme žít způsobem, který nám určil Velký Duch. Kdybychom se pokoušeli žít v dnešní společnosti naším starodávným způsobem, bylo by to jako bychom žili v cizí zemi. Dnes již zbývají jen stíny minulosti.

I dedicate this painting to all courageous and faithful young women and brides who have waited patiently for a husband or loved one to return home.

This painting was created for a book by Serle Chapman. Our Native culture could not have survivied without the old stories handed down through the generations by our traditional elders.

Tento obraz jsem namaloval pro knihu Serla Chapmana. Vždyť naše indiánská kultura by bez vyprávění starých příběhů předávaných z generace na generaci našimi starci nepřežila.

It never fails to impress me when I hear about one of our Native American children who is carrying on our traditions. It gives me the warmest feelings of love and hope for future generations. When I received a letter and photo from Hattie Mitchell and learned that she was one of those young people I knew immediately that I wanted to pay tribute to her by painting this portrait. I hope the Prarie Band Potawatomi People are just as proud of her as I am. I believe that as a Native American Nation you will see her grow into a strong leader for your people which will make you all very proud.

Vždy na mne silně zapůsobí, když slyším o indiánských dětech, které pokračují v našich tradicích. Cítím pak pro budoucí generace tu nejvroucnější lásku a dodává mi to naději. Když jsem dostal dopis a fotografii od Hattie Mitchellové a dozvěděl se, že je jedním z takových dětí, hned mi bylo jasné, že jí musím prokázat poctu namalováním jejího portrétu. Doufám, že Potawatomiové z Prairie Band jsou na ni stejně hrdí jako já. Věřím, že váš indiánský národ bude svědkem toho, jak z ní  vyroste silný představitel vašeho lidu, na nějž všichni budete hrdí.
